INFORMATION ABOUT COOKIES

Cookies are small text files that websites visited by the user send to his computer or mobile device, where they are stored before being sent back to the same websites when they are next visited. It is thanks to cookies that the website remembers the actions and preferences of the user (like, for example, login data, language, font size, other visual settings, etc.) in such a way that they do not have to be given again when the user re-visits the website or moves from one page to another within this. Cookies are therefore used to authenticate online users, monitor browsing sessions and store information on the activities of the users that visit a website, and may also contain a unique identification number that enables us to keep track of the browsing sessions of the user within the website for statistical or advertising purposes. While browsing within a site, the user may also receive cookies on his computer or mobile device from websites or web servers other than those he is visiting (so-called ‘third party’ cookies). Some operations cannot be performed without the use of cookies, which, in certain cases are therefore technically necessary for the website to function.

There are different types of cookies, with different characteristics and functions, and they can remain on the computer or mobile device of the user for different periods of time: there are so-called ‘session cookies’, which are automatically deleted when the browser is closed, and so-called ‘persistent cookies’, which remain on the user’s device until a pre-established time when they expire.

According to legislation currently in force in Italy, the express consent of the user is not always required for the use of cookies. In particular, so-called ‘technical’ cookies, i.e. those used for the sole purpose of sending a communication over an electronic network, or insofar as is strictly necessary to provide the service explicitly requested by the user, do not require such consent. These are, in other words, cookies that are essential for the functioning of the website or necessary to perform the tasks requested by the user.

Among technical cookies, which do not require express consent for their use, the Italian Data Protection Authority (see. General Provision ‘Identification of the simplified procedures for the disclosure of information and the acquisition of consent for the use of cookies – 8 May 2014”) also includes:

analytics cookies, when used directly by the website manager to collect information, in aggregate form, on the number of users and how they visit the website,
browsing or session cookies (for authentication, to make a purchase, etc.),
functional cookies, which allow the user to browse according to a set of selected criteria (for example, language, products selected for purchase) in order to improve the service provided to the user.

For so-called user profiling cookies, on the other hand, i.e. those aimed at creating profiles for the user and used to send advertising messages in line with the preferences selected by the user while browsing the net, prior consent is required. The website Witness Image uses all the above types of cookie, also to improve the experience of the user and the content on offer, and to understand how users browse the website.

In particular, the website Witness Image uses:

Technical cookies, i.e. browsing or session cookies, which are strictly necessary for the functioning of the website and to allow the user to benefit from the requested content and services.
Analytics cookies, which allow us to understand how the website is used by users. No information on the identity of the user or personal data is collected with these cookies. Information is processed in aggregate and anonymous form.
Functional cookies, i.e. those used to activate specific functions of the website and a series of selected criteria (for example, language, products selected for purchase) in order to improve the service provided to the user.
Third party cookies, i.e. cookies from websites or web servers other than Witness Image, used for the own purposes of these third parties.
Third party cookies are also represented on the website by ‘social plugins’ like Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and services such as Google Maps. These are parts of the page generated directly by the aforementioned websites and incorporated into the host website. The most common use of ‘social plugins’ is to share content on social networks. The presence of these plugins involves the sending of cookies from and to all websites managed by third parties. The management of information gathered by ‘third parties’ is governed by the related information notices, which we draw your attention to. To guarantee maximum transparency and convenience, below are the web addresses of the various information notices and ways to manage cookies.

The user may choose which cookies to enable by following the steps indicated below, and may enable, disable or delete cookies (entirely or partially) through the browser settings: however, disabling all or some of the cookies may prevent users from viewing the website, prevent users from accessing certain services and functions of the website or prevent these from working properly, and/or may force users to modify or manually insert certain information or preferences every time they visit the website.
